How to Connect the Ventilation to an Over-the-Range Microwave

Over-the-range microwaves offer advantages over countertop models, the most important being that they free up valuable counter space. While installing an over-the-range microwave may seem like a complex project, most homeowners can accomplish the task themselves. Once you have the appliance mounted to the wall, you must properly connect the ventilation system to remove excess heat and cooking odors from the microwave and underlying range.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the cabinet above the microwave and place a step stool in front of it so you can easily reach the ventilation.

    • 2

Look at the interior of the cabinet and locate the round, aluminum ductwork that extends either from the top of the cabinet or from the wall behind the cabinet. Pull the open end of the duct forward until it reaches the microwave. If it doesn't reach, purchase a length of duct at a home improvement store--typically 6 inches in diameter--and cut off a section long enough to fill the gap. Use tin snips to cut the duct, then secure it to the original duct with duct tape.

    • 3

Look at the base of the cabinet for a hole leading down into the microwave. There is typically a thin, metal rim that extends up out of the hole. Some models have a metal cone, called a duct adapter, that slips over the opening and is attached via screws.

Slide the open end of the ductwork completely over the hole. Hold the duct in place with one hand and secure it to the metal rim or the bottom of the cabinet with duct tape. Wrap the duct tape around the duct twice to prevent air leaks. If there are screws, tighten by turning clockwise with the screwdriver.
