Are Microwave Ovens Harmful From Radiation?

Although microwave ovens are considered safe cooking devices, like any other appliances, they must be used with proper safety precautions to prevent injury. Microwaves are a form of electromagnetic radiation that are capable of heating and cooking foods that contain water. Human tissue, which also contains water, is susceptible to microwave heating and damage.
  1. Microwave Safety Features

    • Microwave radiation is generated in a specialized vacuum diode tube called a magnetron. The microwaves are directed toward the cooking chamber. The case or shell of the microwave oven is made of a metal alloy which prevents the potentially harmful radiation from escaping. Glass microwave-oven doors have metallic mesh screens that prevent microwave radiation from being transmitted. The magnetron is partially controlled by a switch that automatically turns the microwave oven off when the door is open.

    Fundamental Considerations of Radiation Protection

    • In addition to shielding, two factors primarily determine your risk of radiation injury, including that from microwaves: time and distance. The amount of time you spend in close proximity to an energized microwave generator is directly proportional to your radiation-hazard risk. The rate of intensity of microwaves is inversely proportional to the square of the change in distance from the source. This means that if you double the distance between yourself and the oven, microwave intensity is only one-fourth of its original value.

    Especially Radiosensitive Tissues

    • The eyes and testes are especially vulnerable to damage by microwave radiation. Heat buildup from microwave exposure in either the eyes or the testes can cause serious and possibly irreversible damage.

    Your Best Defense

    • Even if you believe that the oven is properly sealed and in good working order, stay at least one arm's length from the oven when it is turned on. Do not use the oven if the door does not close properly or if the glass window is cracked. Should switch failure allow the microwave oven to continue running after it has been turned off or after the door has been opened, unplug the oven and discontinue use.
