How to Mount a Microwave Over a Gas Range

Measure the opening below the cabinet with a tape measure. You need to know the width, height and depth of the space before you purchase a microwave. Select a microwave that will fit in that space.

Measure the studs in the opening by locating them with a stud finder and then by measuring their spacing with a tape measure. You must have studs that measure 16 inches or 24 inches apart.

Remove the mounting bracket from the microwave. In most cases, it attaches to each side of the microwave with Phillips head bolts. If the mounting bracket is not attached, inspect the bracket to see how it does attach. This way, you have a good understanding of how to install the microwave onto the brackets once you have the bracket attached to the wall.

Place the mounting bracket against the wall and line up the bolt holes with the studs. Place a level on top of the bracket and line the bracket up on the wall. Secure the bracket with the supplied attachment screws. If any of the bolt holes in the bracket do not line up with the studs, use toggle bolts. Toggle bolts will ensure the bracket does not pull away from the wall.

Place the microwave up by the wall and plug it into its electrical outlet. Secure the microwave to the bracket with the screws and screwdriver. The exact attachment method will vary depending on brand.

Remove the filter cover from the filter housing and install the carbon-activated filter. This filter neutralizes smells in the air to reduce the odor from cooking.
