How to Mount Brackets for GE Microwaves

GE microwave ovens that mount under suspended cabinetry -- often above oven ranges or cooktops -- require mounting brackets to hold them securely in place. GE provides a U-shaped bracket mount for all suspended microwave installations. The full strip lies along the bottom edge of the microwave, and the two wings lie behind the right and left edges of the microwave housing. Preparing and installing the bracket can be handled easily by one person, but installing the microwave itself usually requires assistance.

Things You'll Need

  • Mounting bracket and provided toggle bolts
  • Pencil
  • Stud finder
  • Drill with 3/16-inch and 7/16-inch bits and a Phillips-head screwdriver bit

Instructions

    • 1

Hold your stud finder up against the wall where you plan to mount your microwave. Mark the wall in pencil where the studs are located, as you will need to bolt the mounting bracket into them. Usually, the studs are spaced either 12 inches or 16 inches apart.

    • 2

Hold the mounting bracket up against the wall, and mark the four positions of the pre-drilled holes -- one for each corner of the bracket. Make sure each of the four positions is aligned within the parameters of the wall stud, as well as with any cooktop or oven range installed below, if applicable.

    • 3

Set aside the mounting bracket within arm's reach, and drill a pilot hole with your drill bit at each of the four pre-marked positions.

    • 4

Hold the mounting bracket back into position on the wall, and align it with the four holes just drilled. Squeeze the wings of a toggle bolt, and slide it through the mounting bracket and into the hole in the wall. Repeat for each of the four bolts.

    • 5

Tighten the bolts using the Phillips-head screwdriver bit on your drill. Turn each bolt until it's snug against the wall and the bracket is secure and immobile. Now you can proceed with wiring hookups and installation.
