Choosing a Height

• Take into account the height of the cupboards surrounding the stove when choosing a height for your microwave. The users of the microwave are also important; people who use a wheelchair or have other disabilities may not be able to reach a microwave set at a height recommended by the manufacturer (in which case, that microwave shouldn't be purchased or used). High-powered ovens should not have a microwave mounted above them.

Manufacturer's Guidelines

• Manufacturers almost universally agree that the distance between the top, not the bottom, of the microwave and the cooking surface should be 30 inches. Installing the oven lower puts it at risk of heat damage and reduces the space for pots on the cooking surface.

Other Guidelines

• The top of the microwave should be approximately 66 inches above the kitchen floor, while the base of the microwave must be a minimum of 2 inches above the backsplash (if there is one).

Other Considerations

• Most ovens are located against an exterior wall so that the hood can easily vent odors and steam out of the house. Your microwave should also be mounted on an exterior wall so its own ventilation system works correctly. Make sure an electrical outlet is within easy reach of the power cord; extension cords are often suitable. if you're unsure about this or any other guidelines, contact your manufacturer.
