Reasons for No Heat in a Maytag Over-the-Range Microwave

Microwave oven repairs can be expensive, especially if the appliance is uninsured or outside of its warranty period. Troubleshooting your Maytag oven from home helps correct minor problems, saving you time and money in the long run. Some faults which result in a loss of heat are relatively easy to resolve without a large investment of time or the need for special tools. In many cases the oven is incorrectly set up or configured, giving the impression that a fault has occurred.
  1. Cancel Defrost Mode

    • Verify that the oven is not in defrost mode when you begin cooking; the heat will be insufficient to cook your food. Some older models are controlled by a dial, which makes accidentally leaving the microwave in defrost mode for the next cycle easier.

    Cancel Demo Mode

    • Demo mode lets prospective owners use the microwave controls in the showroom without starting the magnetron. You may have accidentally engaged demo mode or switched it on to practice using the control panel. Hold the number 3 button to cancel demo mode and return the oven to normal. Hold the button again to reenter demo mode.

    Heat a Cup of Water

    • Place 8 oz. (1 cup) of room temperature water in the microwave, and heat on high for two minutes. The liquid should be hot or very warm when the cycle ends if the magnetron is working correctly. Contact Maytag if the water comes out cold.

    Check for an Error Code

    • Check the display for an error code such as "PF." These codes indicate a problem with a specific part of the oven, such as the magnetron or motor. Hit "Cancel" to clear the code, and try the oven again. You may need a technician to replace the microwave or some of the parts to correct these problems if the error returns.
