How to Install a Kenmore Microhood Combination

Kenmore "microhood combination" refers to a microwave that has a ventilation hood installed above the cook top and replaces a traditional range hood. The microhood combination elevates the microwave oven to a more accessible level and also saves counter space. The accessory exhausts smoke, steam, cooking odors and hot air to the outside. This prevents the buildup of stains and grease on the ceiling, walls, cabinets and other kitchen surfaces.

Measure the cabinet width opening to determine the size required for the unit. The unit requires at least an opening of 30 inches and a similar clearance from the cabinet bottom to the cooking surface. Plan the layout for the ductwork so that the ducts fit between joists or studs. Avoid pipes, electrical conduits and other obstructions. Design the route to make the vent run as straight and as short as possible. The maximum duct run recommended by the manufacturer is 140 linear feet. For most installations, passing the duct through the exterior wall constitutes the shortest route.

    • 2

Install the same size duct throughout the project. Place a duct against the wall and mark the location of the opening. Cut the opening in the wall leading to the exterior. Run the duct along the designated route; avoid placing two elbows back to back. This reduces the airflow and the efficiency of the ventilation system. Use aluminum foil duct tape to seal the connections. Caulk around the pipe leading to the exterior to prevent water infiltration. Install the wall termination cap on the end of the duct.

Disconnect the blower unit from the microwave oven. Use a flat-head screwdriver to remove a mounting screw and two blower-plate screws. Detach the blower plate and lift the blower from the microwave cabinet. Remove the blower wire from the connector.

    • 4

Remove the metal knockout discs from the blower plate with aviation snips. Position the blower unit so that the exhaust ports face the microwave cabinet's rear. Attach the blower wire back to the electrical connector. Secure the blower plate in position with the screws removed earlier.

    • 5

Mark a spot on the wall to indicate the centerline for the unit. Find the stud located on each side of the centerline mark. Place the mounting plate on the wall and align it with the mark. Position the mounting plate so that the top of the plate is a minimum of 30 inches from the cook top.

    • 6

Install the upper-cabinet template according to the installation guidelines. The template installs under the bottom of the cabinet, directly above the cook top. Position the mounting plate to the wall and trace the opening for access to the duct. Cut the opening in the wall to provide access to the duct.

Secure the mounting plate to the wall with the recommended fasteners for the wall type. Attach the exhaust adapter to the tabs located on the mounting plate. Connect the exhaust adapter to the duct. Lift the microwave oven into place and hang it on the support tabs on the wall mount. Attach the microwave oven to the wall. Recruit another person to help hang the oven.
