Microwave Repair Vs. Replace

When your microwave stops working, you may be wondering whether it is a better idea to repair it or replace it. The prices of microwaves can vary due to size, brand and watts; however, microwaves are relatively inexpensive appliances to purchase for your kitchen. Replacement cost may be one of the factors you have in mind when deciding what to do with your microwave.
  1. What's Wrong?

    • What is wrong with your microwave will help you determine whether it is worth repairing or not. If the problem is a light bulb, purchase a new one for a few dollars and install it. If a latch on the door breaks, the microwave will probably no longer work. Most microwaves will not run unless the door fully shuts. Other issues, including the motor, are big problems that --- unless you spent a lot of money on a high-end microwave in the first place --- may not be worth the trouble of repairing.

    Cost

    • Another way to decide whether you should repair or replace a microwave is the cost of the repair versus the cost of a new microwave. Look for a replacement microwave and get an estimate on how much it will cost to repair the old one. Make the choice with the better financial deal. If you do decide to purchase a new one and you have some talent as far as small appliance repair goes, you may want to purchase a book that will help you make repairs when the time comes. Be sure to purchase a book that includes instructions for your particular microwave. If your microwave is still under warranty, it may not cost you anything to get it fixed. Look through the warranty information that came with the unit and see if it is covered.

    Age

    • Sometimes the age of a microwave will help you determine whether it is better to repair or replace it. If a microwave is 10 years old or more, chances are that you are better off just buying a brand-new one. Most newer ones will be more efficient and will use less energy.

    Are You Handy?

    • If you have some knowledge of repairing small appliances, you might be able to do the work yourself. If this is the case, it may be more beneficial to you to repair the microwave. Sometimes the problem is an easy fix where a repairman might still charge $100 or more, depending on the problem. When you can go to the hardware store, purchase the part for yourself and install it, the cost of repair diminishes quite a bit.
