How to Install a Spacemaker Over-the-Range Microwave

Spacemaker is the brand name of certain appliances manufactured by General Electric. The Spacemaker microwave attaches to the wall above your kitchen range and to the cabinets hanging over the range. This conserves counter space. The cabinet over the range must contain a standard 120-volt outlet to power the Spacemaker. If you do not have an electrical outlet over the range, contact an electrician to complete the wiring before you install the Spacemaker.

Instructions

    • 1

Screw on the supplied vent damper to the top of the Spacemaker if you are connecting to ductwork inside the cabinet over the range. If not, screw on the supplied filter.

    • 2

Use the stud finder to mark the spot of two wall studs above the range. Draw a small "X" at each spot with a pencil.

    • 3

Press the supplied template for the mounting bracket against the wall and raise it until the top edge fits against the underside of the cabinet. If your location options are flexible, slide the bracket left or right until the holes align over the "X" marks identifying the wall studs, then make a pencil mark through each hole in the bracket onto the wall. If the wall studs are not located where you need to place the bracket above the range, go ahead and make your pencil marks where they need to be, and plan to use toggle bolts for the installation -- they are an alternative to attaching directly to wall studs.

Hold the microwave close to the bottom of the cabinet and mark the underside of the cabinet with a pencil to align with the mounting holes on top of the microwave. Your microwave may include a paper template to aid in proper placement of the mounting holes.

    • 5

Drill a pilot hole at each pencil mark on the wall and below the cabinet. Drill a 1-inch-diameter hole in the bottom of the cabinet near the wall for the Spacemaker power cord to reach the outlet.

    • 6

Attach the mounting bracket to the wall with the screws that come with the Spacemaker. Use toggle bolts if you are not connecting to wall studs.

    • 7

Lift the Spacemaker onto the bracket with assistance from a helper. The notches on the back of the appliance slide onto the matching notches in the bracket. Raise the Spacemaker power cord behind the appliance and into the 1-inch hole in the cabinet to connect to the power outlet. Lift the damper on the top of the Spacemaker to slide inside the vent at the bottom of the cabinet only if you are hooking up to a vent. Your helper should continue holding the Spacemaker against the underside of the cabinet for the final installation steps.

Push the bolts supplied with the Spacemaker through the inside of the cabinet bottom into the holes on the top of the Spacemaker. Twist the bolts clockwise using a flat-blade screwdriver.
