How Do I Repair the Door Switches on a GE Convection Microwave Oven?

Convection microwave ovens, such as those manufactured by GE, offer rapid microwave heating for food, as well as a convection oven function for baking purposes. These types of microwave ovens use a safety feature within the door frame called a door switch. The switch ensures that the microwave oven door is closed firmly before any heating functions begin, protecting users from being harmed by the microwave energy emitted during cooking. However, a door switch can malfunction from age or a short circuit, causing the convection microwave oven to stop functioning. Repairing or replacing the switch is possible with a few key steps.

Instructions

  1. Door Switch Servicing

    • 1

Depending on the GE model type, either wall-mounted or counter-positioned, pull the microwave away from the wall and unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet.

    • 2

Using a screwdriver, remove the screws holding the microwave oven's cover and slide it off toward the back of the device.

    • 3

Remove the control panel by carefully maneuvering it out of position. Allow the control panel to lay to the side of the oven during servicing.

    • 4

The GE convection microwave oven has two door latch slots with two door switches. Access the door switches, residing behind the door latch slots near the open control panel area. Carefully pry each switch from its plastic panel. Depending on the GE model, there may be two screws holding the panel across the switch. Remove the screws, if applicable.

    • 5

Inspect the switches. At times, corrosion will cover the switch terminals that protrude from the assembly. If corroded, use sandpaper to clean the terminals.

    • 6

It is possible that the door switches may be burned out from electrical short circuiting. In this case, the switches must be replaced. Pull the wiring from the switches' terminals. Slide the wiring connectors onto new switches, observing that the red positive wire matches the positive terminal side and the black negative wire connects so the negative terminal side.
