How to Replace Fuses on the Whirlpool Microwave Oven Combo

A 20-amp line fuse protects a Whirlpool microwave oven hood combination unit's components from a power overload. Electricity from the Whirlpool combination unit's power supply travels through the fuse before it reaches the unit's high-voltage terminal block -- the terminal where each of the unit's high-voltage circuits receive power. A Whirlpool microwave oven combination unit's power supply cord plugs into a standard three-prong, 120-volt electrical outlet. The combination unit's hood fan pushes exhaust air into a 10-by-3-1/4 inch ventilation duct.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull the Whirlpool microwave oven combination unit's electrical plug from its wall outlet, typically located in the cabinet above the microwave. If an electrician hard-wired the microwave to the kitchen's electrical circuit, turn off the kitchen's circuit breaker. Microwaves without an electrical plug use the kitchen's circuit breaker.

    • 2

Remove the two screws that hold the top of the microwave's air grille, located above the microwave's door. Pull the top of the air grille forward then lift it off of the microwave.

    • 3

Open the microwave door and remove the screw that holds the top of the microwave's control panel in place with a Phillips head screwdriver. Slide the top of the control panel away from the microwave, exposing the wire connectors. Pull the two wire connectors from the control panel's wire terminals then set the control panel aside.

    • 4

Slide the high-voltage access panel's locking tab away from the access panel cover. A "Danger" sticker identifies the high-voltage access panel's cover.

    • 5

Lift the snaps that hold the line fuse's white-colored fuse holder's cover in place. Open the cover. The fuse holder sits near the front of the high-voltage panel. A black wire enters each end of the line fuse's fuse holder.

    • 6

Slip the fuse out of its fuse holder retaining clips. Press a new 20-amp line fuse into the retaining clips. Close the fuse holder's cover and press the snaps against the cover.

    • 7

Replace the high-voltage access panel's cover and depress the locking tab.

    • 8

Plug the two wire connectors into the control panel's two wire terminals. The two-pin wire connector fits into the two-pin wire terminal, and the 11-pin wire connector fits into the 11-pin wire terminal.

    • 9

Hold the bottom of the control panel against the bottom of the Whirlpool microwave then push the top of the control panel against the microwave. Replace the control panel's screw and tighten it with the Phillips head screwdriver.

    • 10

Slide the Whirlpool microwave oven combination unit's air grille into place and install the two screws into their screw holes. Tighten the screws with the Phillips head screwdriver. Turn on microwave's circuit breaker or insert the electrical plug into the wall outlet.
