How to Replace the Light in a GE Profile Spacemaker XL Microwave

Changing burnt-out light bulbs is a routine maintenance procedure associated with owning a General Electric Profile series XL microwave oven. As the appliance ages the bulbs will eventually stop working due to normal wear and tear. Installing a replacement 10-watt halogen bulb in one or both of the light cavities located on the underside of the oven is a simple procedure that uses common household tools. The surface lights will be working in under 10 minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the oven's power supply by removing the plug from the outlet or turning off the circuit breaker.

    • 2

Remove the screw holding the cover of the dead light in place and place it to one side. Let the cover hang down.

    • 3

Unscrew the problem bulb by carefully turning it in its socket. Original bulbs have an adhesive seal that must be broken during removal. Make sure the bulb is cool before you touch it.

    • 4

Screw in a replacement 10-watt halogen bulb. The bulbs, GE part number WB36X10163, are available from the company's website and authorized retailers. See Resources.

    • 5

Lift the cover back in place and replace the screw. Reconnect the power to test the new bulb; it should light when you press the "Surface Light" button on the controls.
