Troubleshooting a Whirlpool RM278BXP0

The Whirlpool RM278BXP0 is an older-model microwave that is no longer produced by Whirlpool. The microwave is designed to be installed over a range or an oven and includes several basic functions, such as a clock, timer, defrost and temperature probe. Since the microwave is not a current model and is possibly no longer supported by Whirlpool service, owners might find that their own troubleshooting efforts might be necessary to resolve problems that arise.

Instructions

    • 1

Look at the power cord for the Whirlpool microwave if the unit has no power or is not running. Plug the cord firmly into a live outlet. Replace or reset the circuit breaker or fuse if the outlet is not functional or the microwave has been built into the electrical system and the power cord is not available.

    • 2

Close the microwave door firmly until it latches if the microwave has power but will not start. Press “Start” after selecting the cook feature and time desired. Plug the temperature probe firmly into the microwave wall if the probe is in use.

    • 3

Increase overall cooking time and do not cook at reduced power levels if food seems to take a long time to cook.

    • 4

Touch “Stop/Cancel” if the display is counting down but no food is cooking in the microwave. Close the microwave door completely, as the unit cannot start cooking until the door is closed.

    • 5

Insert at least one-third of the temperature probe into the food if the probe is in use but the microwave turns off too quickly or not quickly enough. Put the probe in the center of the food and do not touch the probe to fat or bone if possible. Allow meat to stand for a few minutes after cooking for temperatures to equalize. Push the probe firmly into the wall of the microwave.
