How to Remove the Charcoal Filter in a GH9115XE Microwave

One way to keep odors under control in your microwave is to change the charcoal filter. The Whirlpool GH9115XE microwave and hood combo uses two different filters. The grease filter under the bottom of the microwave helps exhaust grease when cooking on your stove, while the charcoal filter in the top helps to eliminate odors and circulate the air. Removing the charcoal filter in the GH9115XE does require some disassembly to access it above the unit.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the cabinet above the Whirlpool GH9115XE microwave and unplug the power cord from the outlet. If your microwave is hardwired directly into the junction box in the cabinet, turn off the circuit breaker to the unit.

    • 2

Remove the two screws in the top of the grill with a Phillips screwdriver. The grill is the vent cover above the microwave door, and the screws are visible at each end between the first two vents.

    • 3

Tilt the top of the grill forward with your fingers, then lift it away from the microwave. The charcoal filter is at an angle on top of the microwave.

    • 4

Reach your hand under the rear of the charcoal filter and lift it so that it is even with the front of the filter. Slide the filter away from the microwave.
