An over-the-stove microwave gives you the convenience of a microwave while also saving your countertop space. Proper measurements are crucial for aesthetics, proper functioning, and safety when installing an over-the-stove (also known as a rangetop) microwave in your kitchen.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure from the stove-top surface to where the top of the microwave will be (where the top of the microwave meets the bottom of the overhead cabinets if there are any). There should be at least 30 inches between the top of the microwave and the top of the stove surface.

    • 2

Measure the width of the space where the microwave will go. The distance between the two cabinets or walls should be at least 30 inches.

    • 3

Measure from where the top of the microwave will be. The microwave should not be taller than 16.5 inches. This amount is part of the 30-inch requirement from Step 1.

    • 4

Measure from the top of the back-splash panel on the stove (the part of the stove near the wall above the stove top). There should be at least two inches from the top of the back-splash panel and the bottom of the microwave.

    • 5

Measure the depth of the microwave. It should not extend more than 13 inches from the back wall outward.

    • 6

Measure from where the top of the microwave will be to the floor. This final measurement should be at least 66 inches for optimal placement and height.

    • 7

Measure or look at the specifications of the microwave you want to install. Make sure the specifications fit in the measurements detailed in Steps 1 through 6.
