How to Run a Microwave Oven on a Generator

When the electrical power goes out a backup generator provides the necessary juice to keep the important parts of a home running. Generators come in different power levels and it is important to know if there is sufficient power available for the microwave. For example, if you have a 2,500 watt generator with appliances pulling 1,800 watts, an 800 watt microwave will not have enough power to run.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the generator in a location near the home but not where the exhaust can enter the house.

    • 2

Turn the gas shuttlecock on and start the generator in accordance with its manual.

    • 3

Run the generator for four to five minutes to allow it to begin generating a consistent power output.

    • 4

Plug a heavy duty extension cord into the generator and run it to the microwave.

    • 5

Plug the microwave into the extension cord and use it normally.

    • 6

Unplug the microwave and the extension cord from the generator before turning the generator off.
