My Garbage Disposal Runs but Won't Drain

A garbage disposal grinds large food particles that go down the drain. If too much food is stuffed in the trap, the garbage disposal may become clogged. The garbage disposal will run fine but the water will not drain from the sink. Clearing out a garbage disposal clog is a lot like cleaning a regular pipe, but sharp blades are involved. It is essential to take special precautions when fixing a garbage disposal clog.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the power to the kitchen by flipping the circuit breaker at the house mains. This prevents the blade from turning on, which may cause injury.

    • 2

Insert a pair of needle-nose pliers into the drain to pull out the food clogging the disposal drain.

    • 3

Stuff the overflow hole of the sink with an old rag. Place a plunger over the drain hole and push down the plunger 15 to 20 times.

    • 4

Open the doors under the sink to access the garbage disposal trap. Insert an Allen wrench into the bottom of the garbage disposal and turn it left and right to break up food stuff in the trap.
