How to Properly Dispose of TVs

Outdated or unusable TVs contain toxic materials such as lead and mercury, and should be recycled to ensure they do not end up in a landfill. TVs, as well as other electronic items to be disposed of, are termed e-waste. There are various responsible means for recycling your e-waste.

      Check your neighborhood library or other community resource for a nearby recycling organization that will take your TV. You can also check online for a nearby dropoff location. Some organizations require a fee to offset the costs involved, including collection and recovery. You will want to ensure that the item is not simply being sent to another country, creating an unsafe environment in a third-world location.

      Contact the TV manufacturer or check online to see it they have an e-waste recycling program. In addition to accepting your TV, some offer trade-in value or a gift card for any remaining monetary value.

      If your TV is simply outdated, consider donating it. Salvation Army and Amvets are examples of groups that will accept appliances such as TVs. Some will pick up your items or you can deposit it at the nearest neighborhood dropoff locations.
