Kitchenaide Imperial Garbage Disposal Won't Start

The KitchenAid Imperial Garbage Disposal is a continuous feed disposer installed inline with the plumbing of your kitchen sink. The garbage disposal allows you to put food down the drain rather than throwing it in the trash can. When food is put down the drain, the garbage disposal can be turned on to grind and chop the food until it is small enough to flow down the drain without resistance. If too much food or hard items are inserted into the disposal it may become jammed or not turn on altogether. If the disposal does not turn on, there are a few steps needed to bring it back into operation.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the cabinet below the sink and ensure that the garbage disposal power cord has not been unplugged. If the garbage disposal is plugged in, check the fuse box to ensure that the fuse is not blown.

    • 2

Unplug the disposal and turn off the water. Insert a hex wrench into the hex slot on the bottom of the underside of the garbage disposal. Turn the hex wrench back and forth to free any food that may be stuck under the disposal blades. Continue working the wrench back and forth until the disposal is able to turn at least one full rotation.

    • 3

Remove any remaining objects in the garbage disposal using tongs.

    • 4

Plug the disposal back into the wall, then press the red "Reset" button located on the bottom of the disposal to return the disposal back to normal operation.
