Sink Disposal Types

Safety, noise and convenience are the primary considerations for garbage disposals. In some jurisdictions, waste disposal systems may also dictate the type of disposal unit that can be used. The two primary types of in-sink disposals are continuous feed and batch feed.
  1. Continuous Feed

    • Continuous feed models are wired to a switch. This is typically placed near the sink but not in a location where it can be accidentally turned on. As long as the switch is in the on position, the disposal will continue to run.

    Batch Feed

    • Batch feed models are considered safer than continuous feed units. These units can be turned on only by placing a specially fitted cap over the opening and locking it into position. This makes if unlikely that the unit will be turned on accidentally and prevents food from escaping.

    Septic

    • Special garbage disposal units are available for individuals who have a septic tank. These models contain special rings that help further break down organic matter and have special restrictions on what can be placed in them. These measures help prevent the buildup of organic sludge in the septic tank and lines.
