How to Install an ISE Badger 1

The Badger 1 garbage disposal is made by InSinkErator, a company that makes several garbage disposal models. It has a compact design and a heavy-duty motor for grinding food wastes. Some homeowners find garbage disposals a convenient way to quickly remove food waste from the kitchen while reducing the need to put wastes in the garbage. The wastes instead go to your septic tank or the local sewage treatment plant. Installation of the Badger-1 garbage disposal involves both simple electrical wiring and some basic plumbing work. Neither part of the task is beyond the scope of a do-it-yourself homeowner.

Instructions

    • 1

Flip off the electrical power source for the garbage disposal at the circuit breaker box before attempting to remove your old disposal unit.

    • 2

Remove the old disposal unit. To accomplish that, disconnect the sink drain from the waste discharge tube, and remove the dishwasher connection from the disposal if a dishwasher is connected.

    • 3

Place your hand under the disposal to support its weight. Insert the end of the provided Allen wrench into the mounting lug. Turn the mounting lug clockwise with the wrench until the disposal is released into your hand.

    • 4

Turn the disposal upside down. Unscrew the electrical cover plate with your screwdriver. Unscrew the cable connector from the disposal. Pull the wires out from the disposal and remove connections to the electrical supply. To accomplish this, remove wire nuts from white and black or red wires; remove the grounding screw to release the green ground wire.

    • 5

Remove the old disposal mounting component from the sink drain, unless the mounting for new disposal unit is the same as the old. In that case, skip Steps 6 through 10, which outline the installation of a new mounting component.

    • 6

Apply a 1/2-inch rope of putty around the sink flange included with the Badger-1 disposal kit. Firmly press the flange into the drain hole from above the sink.

    • 7

Use a weight on the top side of the sink to hold the flange in place and prevent it from being pushed up through the drain. For the weight, place a paper towel in the sink and put the disposal unit on top of the towel, covering the drain.

    • 8

Pull the snap ring from Step 3 open. Press it over the tip of the flange under the sink until it snaps into place.

    • 9

Insert the gasket over the sink flange, followed by the backup flange. Secure with the mounting ring. Use your fingers to lightly screw the 1 1/2-inch screws provided for the mounting ring into the corresponding holes of the back of flange.

    • 10

Locate the dishwasher inlet near the top of the disposal if you are connecting a dishwasher. Turn the disposal on its side. Stick the end of a screwdriver into the dishwasher inlet. Using a hammer, gently strike the end of the screwdriver until the drain plug pops out inside the disposal. Use pliers to remove the plug from inside the disposal.

    • 11

Flip the disposal upside down to remove the electrical cover plate with a screwdriver. Pull the internal wires out through the opening. Do not remove the cardboard shield under the cover.

    • 12

Insert the cable connector. Feed the electrical cable into the access hole next to the electrical cover plate. Tighten the cable connector with a screwdriver.

    • 13

Locate the white wire on the disposal unit and the white (neutral) wire from the power source. Without any cutting, connect the ends of these wires with a wire nut. Connect the black wire from the disposal unit to the red or black (hot) wire from the power source, using a wire nut. Use a screwdriver to secure the ground wire to the green grounding screw on the disposer. Push the wires down into the disposer through electrical cover hole. Replace the electrical cover plate.

    • 14

Place the provided flange over the discharge tube from the disposer kit. Insert the provided gasket into the discharge outlet of disposal. Align the flange and discharge outlet drill holes. Secure the flange with a screwdriver and two bolts provided.

    • 15

Align the three mounting tabs on the top of the disposal unit with the slide-up ramps on the mounting ring of the sink flange. With the end of the Allen wrench, turn the mounting ring counterclockwise until the tabs lock over the edges of the ramps. The disposal unit should hang securely from the mount.

    • 16

Reinstall the plumbing and dishwasher connections to the disposal unit. Use your adjustable wrench to secure the best fit for the discharge tube with the plumbing connection.

    • 17

Cut out the product specifications label. Place it on the disposal unit in a visible location.
