How to Install a GE Garbage Disposal

If you experience many kitchen sink backups because of all the food you throw away, installing a GE garbage disposal might be the solution to your problem. The appliances mount underneath the kitchen sink. A powerful grinder inside chews up excess food and breaks it down into small pieces, which are then flushed away through the drain plumbing. If you have a dishwasher installed in your kitchen, you can also hook it up to the disposal and make short work of any food washed away inside.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the electricity to the circuit where the GE garbage disposal will be installed at the main circuit breaker. Test the wires with a voltmeter to ensure that the electricity has been cut off before proceeding.

    • 2

Clean out the bottom of the sink where you will be installing the disposal with a standard cleaner and rag.

    • 3

Turn the drain flange upside down. Insert a tube of silicone caulk into your caulk gun and trim off the end. Squeeze the trigger and apply a bead of caulk along the perimeter of the drain flange. Turn the flange right side up and press it into place in the drain.

    • 4

Position yourself underneath the sink. Screw the bottom portion of the drain onto the underside of the flange in the sink above. Depending on the model of your GE garbage disposal, the disposal supporting bracket may be integrated into the lower part of the drain already, or you may need to attach it by either screwing or locking it into place.

    • 5

Align the GE garbage disposal so it is underneath the mounting bracket. Slip the disposal into the mounting bracket and turn to the right to lock it into place. There may also be a mount locking tool that you need to insert into the mount and turn to lock the disposal in place. Tighten any screws that may be present to secure the disposal.

    • 6

Remove the electrical panel cover on the side of the disposal. Connect the white wire from the house to the white wire on the GE disposal, the black wire from the home circuit to the black wire on the disposal and the bare copper wire from the house to the green grounding terminal or green wire on the disposal. Secure the ends of the wires with wire nuts and electrical tape. Carefully push the wires into the panel and secure the cover.

    • 7

Connect the bottom outlet on the disposal to the sewer inlet pipe. Secure by tightening the coupling.

    • 8

Connect the drain hose from the dishwasher, if you have one installed. Knock out the dishwasher inlet with a screwdriver and remove. Trim off the end of the dishwasher hose to the inlet size of the garbage disposal. Slip the hose in place and secure it with a hose clamp.

Restore the power to the GE disposal circuit. Turn on the disposal and ensure that it works properly.
