Installing a Sears Garbage Disposal

Sears sells a number of different garbage disposal models under the Kenmore brand. These disposals range from 1/4-horsepower (HP) models all the way up to 1-HP models. Garbage disposals install underneath the kitchen sink and are held in place with a special flange installed in the sink. In order to work, they also need an electrical connection and a plumbing connection to the sewer inlet. You only need basic do-it-yourself skills and a few simple tools to install a Sears garbage disposal.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the electricity to the circuit where you will be installing the Sears garbage disposal. Use a voltmeter to check the leads to ensure that you have cut the power.

    • 2

Use a scouring pad and cleanser to clean out the bottom of the sink where you will be installing the Sears garbage disposal. Dry out the sink with a clean rag.

    • 3

Roll out a thin strip of plumber's putty. Press the putty in place on the underside of the Sears sink flange. Turn the flange over right side up and place it in the flange opening at the bottom of the sink.

    • 4

Position yourself underneath the sink. Slip the retaining ring in place on the underside of the flange in the sink above you. Secure the flange by screwing the flange bolts in place with a screwdriver.

    • 5

Slip the Sears garbage disposal in place by locking the ring at the top of the disposal into the retaining ring. Depending on the model, there may be indicators etched onto the disposal ring to help you align it in place. Some Sears garbage disposal models may have a special Allen wrench you need to use to lock the disposal in place.

    • 6

Remove the electrical cover on the side of the disposal. Attach the leads from the house wiring to the Sears disposal. Connect the similarly colored wires by twisting the ends together with a wire nut and securing it with electrical tape. The white wire from the house connects to the white wire on the Sears disposal, while the black wire from the house connects to the black wire inside the Sears unit. Connect the bare copper wire from the house to either the green ground wire inside the Sears disposal or the green terminal screw, according to the instructions that came with your unit. Replace the electrical panel cover and secure it.

    • 7

Connect the outlet on the bottom of the disposal to the sewer pipe inlet. Remove the coupling on the Sears disposal and wrap the threads with plumber's tape. Connect the sewer line and secure it to the disposal with the coupling.

    • 8

Restore power to the electrical circuit. Turn on the water in the sink above the disposal and turn on the power switch. Watch the disposal as it operates. Secure the couplings by tightening them with a wrench, if needed.
