Undo the two plastic ring nuts connecting the sink drain p-trap to the drain pipe with a pair of adjustable channel pliers, and remove the p-trap.
Unscrew the large nut holding the strainer body to the underside of the sink with the channel pliers. Lift the strainer body out and remove the remaining plumber's putty from the lip of the drain hole inside the sink with a putty knife. Wipe the flange clean with a rag.
Roll out a 1/4-inch thick bead of plumber's putty between your hands and press it onto to flange surrounding the drain opening. Insert a new sink flange into the opening and press it into place.
Slide the fiber gasket and backup ring provided with the garbage disposal onto the sink flange sleeve from under the sink. Tighten the three mounting screws in the backup ring with a screwdriver. Tighten each screw a few times in turn and repeat until all the screws are tightened evenly, and the mounting assembly is seated flush against the underside of the sink. Scrape off excess plumber's putty from inside the sink with a putty knife and wipe clean.
Check the main electric panel to ensure that the circuit breaker feeding power to the garbage disposal unit is off. Place the disposer under the sink and lay it on its side. Expose the wiring by removing the cover plate from the base of the disposer. Twist each wire protruding from the disposal around the same colored wire in the end of the newly fitted cable leading from the wall; black to black, white to white and green to green. Screw ceramic wire nuts securely onto each twisted connection so that all bare wires are hidden. Replace the cover plate.
Tap out the dishwasher knockout plug with a screwdriver and hammer if you are connecting a dishwasher to the garbage disposer. The knockout plug is situated above the round discharge outlet on the side of the disposer. Screw the short plastic air gap connector provide into the exposed dishwasher inlet. Tighten the connector with a pair of adjustable channel pliers.
Lift the garbage disposal. Turn the unit so that the discharge outlet is opposite the drain. Align the slots on the disposal inlet with the mounting ears on the previously installed backup ring. Push upward and twist the lower mounting ring on top of the disposal. You will feel it snap into place as it locks the three mounting ears into the mounting assembly.
Place the discharge tube gasket into the recess on the black discharge tube mounting flange. Attach the flange surrounding the discharge pipe to the discharge outlet with the two screws provided. Position the pipe so that the bend points downward. Tighten the two screws on the flange with a screwdriver.
Attach the p-trap and connect the disposer to the drain with the plastic ring nuts on the ends of the p-trap. Tighten the ring nuts securely with a pair of channel pliers. If the disposal discharge outlet is too long, cut it to the correct length with a hacksaw. If it is too short, purchase the correct length extension piece to make up the difference.
Slip a hose clamp over the dishwasher outlet pipe. Push the dishwasher outlet pipe over the plastic air gap connector on the disposer. Tighten the hose clamp with a screwdriver.
Lock the disposal unit in place on the sink mounting assembly. Follow the instructions that came with the unit and use the special tool provided to complete the assembly.
Open one of the taps and allow water to drain out of the sink. Inspect the plumbing under the sink for leaks. Tighten loose connections if necessary. Reset the disposal breaker switch to the "on" position. Spoon some food waste into the sink drain. Turn the water on and switch on the garbage disposer to test the installation.
