How to Troubleshoot a Kenmore Garbage Disposal Flywheel

Kenmore garbage disposers attach to kitchen sinks to grind up small items that go into the sink, such as food debris, rinds, scraps, small bones and other food waste. The food disposal materials include plastic and galvanized steel for increased durability, and it has a single-phase induction motor. While the disposer comes with a limited warranty, certain problems with the unit, such as issues with the flywheel, may be resolved through some troubleshooting efforts.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off and unplug the Kenmore garbage disposer.

    • 2

Unscrew the rubber splash guard from the top of the disposer and set aside.

    • 3

Look down into the disposer and see if an object is stuck inside, preventing the flywheel from operating. Use a pair of plastic tongs to reach down and remove the item.

    • 4

Use the tongs or a wooden utensil handle to manually move the flywheel once you remove the object.

    • 5

Restore power and press the red "Reset" button on the bottom of the garbage disposer unit.

    • 6

Run cold water into the disposer and start the disposer to clear away any additional debris inside the flywheel. Turn off the disposer and the water.
