Do-It-Yourself Garbage Disposal Removal

If your garbage disposal brakes, save money by removing it yourself rather than calling a plumber. Removing a garbage disposal is a simple project that requires about an hour to complete. Save your old disposal's components because you may be able to use some of the old pieces when installing a new unit.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the power to the disposal. Set a bucket under the U-trap.

    • 2

Loosen the slip nuts from both ends of that U-trap to remove it. Turn the slip nuts counterclockwise with a pipe wrench.

    • 3

Pull the small hose that connects the disposal to the dishwasher off from the top of the disposal.

    • 4

Unscrew any screws that may be holding the disposal to the bottom of the sink. Twist the body of the disposal left and down to remove it.

    • 5

Remove the power cord from the disposal by pushing off the cord's cover on the bottom of the disposal. Unscrew the screws that hold the cord to the disposal.
