How to Change Sound Baffles on a KitchenAid Garbage Disposer

In addition to manufacturing kitchen cookware, KitchenAid makes several models of garbage disposals. These garbage disposals are designed to be installed under your kitchen sink. The sound baffle, or quiet collar sink baffle as it is referred to by KitchenAid, muffles the vibrations made by your disposal. The baffle is a round rubber piece that fits between your sink and the top of the disposal. Should the baffle wear out or break, you can replace it yourself with hand tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Shut off the power at the circuit breaker panel to the breaker that powers your garbage disposal.

    • 2

Remove the contents inside the cabinet under your sink, where the disposal is mounted. Lay a towel beneath the disposal. Locate the water valve on the back wall under the cabinet and turn it all the way clockwise to turn the water supply off.

    • 3

Use your Channellock pliers to remove the U-shaped plastic drainpipe from your disposal's discharge pipe. Use the towel to catch or wipe up any water that may spill out.

    • 4

Grasp the body of your disposal and turn it counterclockwise to unlock it and take it off the mounting bracket. Lay the disposal on its side inside your cabinet.

    • 5

Use a putty knife and needle-nose pliers to work the old baffle from the top of the disposal body. Once you have removed the old baffle, use an old rag to clean away food or gunk from the inside rim where the baffle sits. Fit the new baffle over the top of the disposal and push down in place, using your thumbs. Work around the seal until the new baffle is completely seated.

    • 6

Lift the disposal back up and align it with the mounting bracket by hand. Twist it clockwise by hand until it mounts back into place securely. You will hear it snap back into place.

    • 7

Reconnect the drainpipe to your disposal's discharge pipe, using the Channellock pliers to tighten it.

    • 8

Turn your water supply valve counterclockwise to turn the water back on. Remove the towel and put items back under the sink. Restore power to your disposal by flipping the breaker back on.
