Garbage Disposal Replacement Instructions

If you're changing-out an existing garbage disposal, the job is simpler than fitting a new dispose installation because drainage and wiring will be in place. Replacing a garbage disposal also becomes simpler if you choose the same make and model that was existing. Replacing a garbage disposal involves removing the old one, connecting and mounting the replacement unit.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the power at the circuit breaker.

    • 2

Disconnect the drain tap from the waste discharge and disconnect the dishwasher drain if there's one connected.

    • 3

Insert the wrench that came with the garbage disposal into the mounting lug just above the main body of the old appliance. The appliance will drop out.

    • 4

Turn the appliance over and remove the electrical wiring---it's usually below a plate.

    • 5

Disconnect the electrical wires from the supply.

    • 6

Knock out the drain plug on the new appliance and remove the plug from the inside.

    • 7

Knock out the inlet for connecting the dishwasher, if you will be using one.

    • 8

Reattach the wires by removing the electrical plate and attaching the cable you removed from the previous install. Try to re-use existing parts, such as the cable connector. Then replace the plate.

    • 9

Slide the flange over the discharge tube--including the gaskets. Secure with the included bolts.

    • 10

Hang the appliance by aligning the mounting tabs on the mounting ring.

    • 11

Rotate the disposal so that the discharge tube is aligned with the drain tab and reconnect all of the plumbing, including dishwasher.

    • 12

Reconnect the wiring at the wall-side.

    • 13

Fill the sink with water and test.
