How to Reinstall a Garbage Disposal

Garbage disposals are viewed as a necessary home appliance by many homeowners. Cleaning up after a meal is as simple as rinsing the leftover food off the plates, into the sink and down the garbage disposal. From there, it is ground up and disposed of. When your current garbage disposal fails to work properly, reinstalling a new one moves to the top of your "to-do" list. Reinstalling a new garbage disposal is made easier because the required electrical wiring already is in place.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the mounting ring from the new garbage disposal by turning it clockwise and pulling it up. Pull the cushion mount off the mounting ring's bottom. Remove the screws holding the support ring onto the mounting ring.

    • 2

Place the sink gasket over the sink's opening. If no gasket was supplied, roll a bit of plumber's putty until the width is slightly smaller than your little finger's width. Wrap the putty around the sink flange's bottom edge. Push the sink flange firmly into the sink's opening. Wipe away the excess putty with a damp paper towel.

    • 3

Slide the supplied fiber gasket over the bottom of the sink flange. Slide the support ring on after the gasket. Put the mounting ring on next and secure it in place with the screws you had removed in Step 1.

    • 4

Lay the new garbage disposal on its side underneath the sink. Use a circuit tester to check that the power that will supply the garbage disposal is turned off at the main circuit. Remove the screws holding the garbage disposal's bottom in place. Pull the bottom off to expose the electrical wiring.

    • 5

Pull the end caps off the garbage disposal's wires. Locate the electrical wiring coming from the wall underneath the sink. Connect like-colored wires together using wire nuts. Reattach the disposal's bottom.

    • 6

Put the cushion mount over the garbage disposal's top opening. Lift the disposal up to the mounting ring. Line up the tabs on the garbage disposal with the indentations in the mounting ring. Twist the garbage disposal counterclockwise to lock it into place.

    • 7

Place the small elbow gasket over the supplied discharge tube. Slide the discharge tube into the hole in the garbage disposal's side. Line up the holes in the discharge tube's flange with the holes in the garbage disposal. Secure the tube in place with the supplied screws.

    • 8

Place one end of the U-shaped trap pipe onto the discharge tube and the other end onto the pipe coming from the wall. Tighten the trap in place by turning the fitting connections. Hand tighten first, then finish tightening with a wrench.

Plug the cord attached to your new garbage disposal into the GFCI outlet located underneath your sink. Restore power to the garbage disposal.
