When you install a garbage disposal, you cannot use the same type of drain that the sink uses. A typical drain installation uses an S-trap. The type of drain that you must use with a garbage disposal is a P-trap. It only takes a couple of minutes to remove the S-trap and replace it with the P-trap. In most cases, if you purchase a garbage disposal installation kit, it will include the P-trap that you need.
