How to Install Garbage Disposal Plumbing

When you install a garbage disposal where there is no existing unit, you must install the proper drainpipes as well. A standard kitchen sink installation uses an S-trap. When you install a disposal unit, you must install a P-trap in place of the S-trap. An average DIY person can install the new drain in less than 30 minutes. Most garbage disposal installation kits will come with the proper fittings to install the drain, including the P-trap.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the S-trap from the drainpipe with the pipe wrench.

    • 2

Wrap the exposed threads with plumbers tape. This will help to prevent seepage, and will keep the pipes from seizing together if you are using metal pipes.

    • 3

Connect the long end of the P-trap to the garbage disposal unit. Tighten it in place using the screwdriver. Connect the other end of the trap to the drainpipe. Tighten the fitting with the pipe wrench.
