When you install a garbage disposal where there is no existing unit, you must install the proper drainpipes as well. A standard kitchen sink installation uses an S-trap. When you install a disposal unit, you must install a P-trap in place of the S-trap. An average DIY person can install the new drain in less than 30 minutes. Most garbage disposal installation kits will come with the proper fittings to install the drain, including the P-trap.
