How to Replace the Mounting Assembly in a Garbage Disposal

A garbage disposal is mounted to the underside of the a kitchen sink and is used to grind up food particles so that they can be washed down the drain easily. An electric motor powers cutting blades within the disposal to accomplish this task. A rusted mounting assembly may weaken the disposal-to-sink connection, and will need to be replaced.

Things You'll Need

  • No-touch electrical tester (optional)

Continue if the tester indicates the current has been turned off. Twist off the wire nuts where the wiring from the disposal attaches to the building electrical wiring. Twist the wire connections apart with a pair of pliers. Skip this step if your disposal has a power cord that is plugged into an outlet.
