How to Install a Kenmore Garbage Disposal

The Kenmore company has been making appliances since 1927. The company started out with laundry machines, but over the years branched out to vacuum cleaners, dishwashers and garbage disposals. Bad food thrown away in a garbage can emit foul odors. Garbage disposals offer an efficient way to dispose of the food without the smelly results. You can purchase a new Kenmore garbage disposal at your local Sears hardware store. Depending on the disposer you purchase, you will receive a one- to 10-year warranty.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the water supply at the knob located underneath the sink. Turn the hot and cold faucets on to drain water from the pipe. Remove the small pipe that connects the P-trap to the sink. Use a pipe wrench to unscrew the pipe's connections. Unscrew the connection directly above the small pipe that holds the sink flange --- the metal ring around the sink hole --- in place.

    • 2

Place a screwdriver in the mounting lug's hole. The mounting lug is located on the top of the Kenmore garbage disposal and helps hold the disposer under the sink. Twist the mounting assembly --- the ring above the mounting lug --- counterclockwise and remove it from the disposer.

    • 3

Turn the mounting ring upside down. Turn the three screws until the rubber ring inside the mounting ring is loose. Insert a flat-head screwdriver between the rubber ring and base and lift off the ring.

    • 4

Roll plumber's putty into a 3/4-inch-thick rope. Turn the supplied sink flange upside down. Wrap the putty rope around the flange. Push the sink flange into the sink's hole. Remove any excess putty that pushes out from under the flange, using a putty knife.

    • 5

Slide the supplied fiber gasket onto the sink flange's bottom from underneath the sink. The triangular-shaped back-up ring goes on after the fiber gasket. Slide the mounting ring on next, followed by the rubber ring you had removed earlier. Ask an assistant to hold the sink flange in position while you tighten the screws to secure all items in place.

    • 6

Hold the Kenmore garbage disposal upside down and remove the screw that secures the door over the wiring connections. Pull the three wires out of the opening. Feed the electrical wires from underneath the sink through the hole next to the door you removed. Use wire strippers to remove 1/2 inch of rubber casing off each wire's end. Hold the two white wires together, and twist a wire nut over them. Repeat this step with the two black wires. Loosen the green grounding screw, and wrap the copper wire around it. Tighten the screw to hold the wire in place. Push the wires back in and replace the door.

    • 7

Lift the Kenmore garbage disposal up to the mounting ring. Line up the three tabs on the disposer with the mounting tracks in the mounting ring. Insert a screwdriver into the hole in the mounting ring, and turn the ring to the right to secure the disposer in place.

    • 8

Slide the supplied metal ring over the supplied discharge tube. Push the supplied rubber gasket into the discharge hole in the disposer's side. Push the tube in over the gasket. Turn the tube so it points towards the P-trap. Line up the holes in the metal ring with the holes on either side of the drainage hole. Secure the ring in place with the provided screws.

    • 9

Place the P-trap's loose end over the drainpipe. Tighten the P-trap's connection, using a pipe wrench. Restore the water supply to the sink. Turn on the water and check for any leaks.
