Turn off the power for the kitchen circuit at the breaker box. Be sure to place a label on the breaker so that someone does not accidentally turn the power on while you are working. Disconnect the trap from the existing tailpiece using a pipe wrench to loosen the fitting. Disconnect the trap from the drainpipe at the wall using the pipe wrench. Discard the S-trap since you will be installing a new P-trap on the drain.
Remove the retaining ring on the existing drain using the pipe wrench. Remove the drain from the sink bowl. Spread plumber's putty around the bottom of the lip of the disposal drain. Place the drain in the sink bowl and press it into place. Place the gasket and retaining ring on the disposal drain under the sink bowl. Tighten the retaining ring using the pipe wrench. Connect the electrical wire to the kitchen circuit. Install wire nuts on the connections to cover them.
Remove the cover on the wire box on the Emerson E30-5 disposal. Connect the wires on the disposal to the electrical wire. Install wire nuts on the splices, twisting them clockwise to tighten them. Push the wires inside the disposal and tighten the cover on the wire box. Lift the Emerson garbage disposal into place at the sink drain. Insert a screwdriver into the locking ring and turn it clockwise to secure the disposal in place. Turn the disposal so the drain lines up.
Install the P-trap to the disposal and tighten the retaining screws using a screwdriver. Connect the P-trap to the drain. Tighten the fitting using a pipe wrench. Turn the power on at the breaker box to the kitchen circuit. Run water into the disposal drain and turn the disposal on to test it.
