Turn off the switch that operates the Kenmore disposal.
Locate the reset button on the bottom of the disposal and press it in and hold it for 20 seconds to ensure that it engages. Turn on the switch that operates the garbage disposal, and, if it still does not work, continue to troubleshoot.
Find the disposal wrench that came with the Kenmore 6045 garbage disposal. The wrench looks like a large Allen wrench and is bent on both ends. Insert one end of the wrench into the shaft on the bottom of the disposal and twist it back and forth. Sometimes the motor becomes temporarily frozen and needs to be freed. Turn on the switch to test if this solved the problem.
Replace the garbage disposal if you were not able to get it to work by troubleshooting. It is generally less expensive to get a new disposal than it is to replace a motor or other part.
