Disconnect power to your Kenmore garbage disposer. Unplug the power cord attached to the unit or flip the circuit breaker to turn it off.
Place one end of the wrenchette that came with the disposal into the small hole in the bottom of the disposer and turn it back and forth if the disposer is jammed. Continue moving the wrenchette back and forth until it loosens enough to turn one full turn. When the wrenchette has turned one full revolution, remove it and set it aside. Use a pair of tongs to reach into the disposer and pull out the item that's causing the jam. Reconnect the power to the disposal. Wait five minutes then push the reset button on the bottom of the unit.
Reach down through the sink opening and use a long-handled brush to clean the underside of the splash baffle and the upper lip of the grinding chamber if there is dirt or a smell coming from the disposer. Put the sink stopper into the sink and fill the sink up approximately halfway with warm water. Reconnect power to the disposer and remove the sink stopper. Combine 1/4-cup baking soda with water and pour it into the sink then turn on the garbage disposer. Allow the baking soda mixture to be ground up thoroughly by the disposer then turn off the unit.
Pour a garbage disposer cleaner or put fresh citrus peels into the disposer if the unit still smells after cleaning. Run water and start the disposer. Run the disposer for at least 60 seconds.
