How to Install an Air Gap on a Garbage Disposal

If you notice that your dishwasher has a rancid odor when its door is open, maybe it is time to install an air gap. An air gap is a plumbing device that prevents waste water from your garbage disposal from back-washing into your dishwasher. The design of the air gap allows waste water to move in only one direction — away from the dishwasher and into the garbage disposal.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull the cap straight off the air gap and set it aside. Unscrew the ribbed nut from the top of the air gap and set it aside as well.

    • 2

Insert the air gap though the mounting hole in the sink deck from the bottom. Adjust the large retaining nut on the bottom of the air gap so that at least one-half inch of threads are protruding through the top of the sink, if necessary.

    • 3

Thread the ribbed nut back onto the top of the air gap and snug it down firmly by hand. Turn the vent hole in the cap toward the wall, and push it back down on the ribbed nut until it is fully seated.

    • 4

Push one end of the larger-diameter hose that came with the air gap onto the large fitting on the underside of the air gap. Push the other end of the hose into the dishwasher drain outlet fitting on the garbage disposal. Place a hose clamp over each end of the hose, and tighten the clamps with a Phillips screwdriver.

Push one end of the smaller-diameter hose that came with the air gap onto the small fitting on the underside of the air gap. Push the other end of the hose into the drain outlet fitting on the dishwasher. Place a hose clamp over each end of the hose and tighten the clamps with a Phillips screwdriver.
