How to Clean an InSinkErator

Although the InSinkErator garbage disposal is a convenient appliance, often it is too convenient and can be overlooked when it comes to cleaning. Over time, food buildup causes a foul odor and also interferes with the efficiency of the cutting blades. It is a good idea to clean the disposal once a month to prevent odors and food buildup. Cleaning an InSinkErator disposal does not require any disassembly of the unit. Cleaning is as simple as disposing of food through the disposal.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the sink drain stopper into the drain hole. Fill the sink halfway with lukewarm water. Add ¼ cup of baking soda to the sink water and mix well with a wooden spoon.

    • 2

Pull the stopper out of the sink drain and turn on the InSinkErator disposal switch. Once most of the water is out of the sink, turn on the cold water for one minute. This cleans and rinses the InSinkErator.

    • 3

Turn off the InSinkErator switch and the water faucet.

    • 4

Place small pieces of citrus fruit peelings into the InSinkErator, if the disposal gives off a foul odor. Orange, lemon and grapefruit peels work to deodorize the disposal.

Turn on the cold water and turn on the InSinkErator. Allow the disposal to disintegrate the citrus peelings. Once the peelings are gone, turn off the disposal and the water.
