How to Replace a Badger 5 Garbage Disposal

The Badger series of garbage disposals are InSinkErator's economical line. They're less expensive than the other models, have galvanized steel grind systems instead of stainless steel, and don't operate as quietly. The Badger 5 model has a 1/2-horsepower induction motor. All InSinkErator disposals feature the same Quick-Lock sink mounting system, a collar attached to the sink flange which allows for quick attachment of the disposal. Replacing a Badger 5 is quicker and easier than installing one from scratch because you can use the existing hardware.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the power to the disposal off at the circuit breaker or fuse box.

    • 2

Use the InSinkErator Jam-Buster wrench supplied with the new disposal to loosen and remove the two mounting bolts from the discharge flange on the side of the disposal. Pull the discharge pipe out of the disposal and swing it aside.

    • 3

Loosen the mounting screws that secure the disposal to the Quick-Lock flange beneath the sink using the Jam-Buster wrench. Turn the lower mounting ring, attached to the disposer, so that the tabs line up with the upper mounting ring tabs. Lower the disposal and set it on its side.

    • 4

Unscrew the wiring access panel from the bottom of the old Badger 5 with a screwdriver and remove the panel. Loosen the wire nuts connecting the two white wires and the two black wires and untwist the wires to free the power cord. Detach the green or bare copper ground wire.

    • 5

Open the access panel on the bottom of the new Badger 5 and connect the white wire, black wire and ground wire from the power cord with the corresponding wires in the disposal using the wire nuts. Screw the panel back onto the disposal.

    • 6

Connect the disposal to the sink flange by lining up the mounting ring tabs and twisting the bottom ring. Tighten the mounting screws. Attach the discharge pipe to the discharge flange and tighten the mounting bolts.

    • 7

Restore the power to the garbage disposal circuit. Turn on the water and disposal and check for leaks.
