What Can Go Down a Garbage Disposal?

A garbage disposal can seem like a miracle when it comes to scraping plates and disposing of items that might make your garbage smell bad, but there are many things to consider when using a garbage disposal. Not everything that will fit in the disposal is good for your septic system or pipes. So what can you put down the disposal with no worries about the septic system, pipes or damage to the disposal?
  1. Veggies and Fruit

    • Vegetables and fruits are fine for the garbage disposal, although you should avoid potato peels, as they can clog the drain.

    Meat Scraps

    • Meat scraps are fine as long as there are no large bones that will damage the blades.

    Coffee Filters and Grounds

    • Coffee filters break down quickly and are fine to put in the disposal. And coffee grounds are said to help clear odors out of the disposal.

    Baking Soda and Vinegar

    • These items should be put down the disposal to clean it once a week.

    Breads and Doughs

    • Bread and dough can be placed in the garbage disposal; however, you should run a lot of hot water while using the disposal and for a few minutes afterward.
