Turn the power off at the main breaker panel. If you are not sure which fuse or breaker your garbage disposal is on, turn the main breaker off just to be safe
Make sure the waste disposal switch is in the off position. Even though the power is off, you can never be too careful.
Remove the splash guard from around the outside of the garbage disposals opening. This will make viewing the inside of the disposal easier as well as give you a little more room to work.
Look inside the disposal for any objects that may be clogging it. Use a flashlight to help you see if it's dark inside. Large fruit peels, bones, glass, shells, and other objects are common disposal cloggers.
Once you have located the clog, remove it with a large pair of tongs. You should never put your hand directly into the garbage disposal.
If the clog isn't obvious after looking inside the disposal, fill the disposal with water and try clearing it with a plunger.
Once your disposal is unclogged, turn the cold water on while running the disposal to flush it out.
