How to Clean Garbage Disposal Plastic Build Up

Your kitchen sink's garbage disposal is an electrical device installed inside the kitchen sink between the sink's drain and shredder. It is designed to remove food chunks that have gotten past the drain screen by chopping them up into smaller pieces, decreasing the chances of food particles stopping up the sink. If plastic dishware breaks and its pieces get lodged inside the drain, the garbage disposal has the ability to remove it--however, it may take some extra steps to ensure the pieces are completely gone.

Things You'll Need

  • Liquid dishwasher detergent
  • Bucket
  • 1/2 cup of baking soda
  • 1/2 cup of hot white distilled vinegar
  • Scrub brush

Instructions

    • 1

Secure the drain screen into the mouth of the drain. Run hot water into the drain for a few minutes or add two drops of dishwasher liquid detergent to a bucket of boiling water and pour it down the drain.

    • 2

Turn on the garbage disposal and allow water to flush through for five minutes. The hot or boiling water would have already loosened the debris and plastic material left inside the disposal enough for the blades to complete the task of removal.

    • 3

Pour the baking soda and hot white distilled vinegar down the drain to deodorize it. Let it sit for five to 10 minutes. Rinse away by running hot water down the disposal for two to five minutes.

    • 4

Using a drop of liquid dishwasher detergent, scrub grime from the drain screen. Remove any potential plastic shard materials by hand. Rinse well. Replace drain screen.
