How to Remove the Garbage Disposal From a Sink

Garbage disposals are mounted on the underside of your sink. Food and other organic materials are passed through the sink and into the disposal, where a grinder mixes up the material inside and breaks it up into smaller pieces. They are then flushed out of the disposal and into your home's sewage system. Removing the garbage disposal from the sink isn't a difficult operation, but the unit may be heavy.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the electricity for the garbage disposal, either by unplugging the unit or turning off the power to the circuit that holds the disposal.

    • 2

Disconnect the garbage disposal from the electric circuit. This step is only required if the disposal is hardwired into the electric circuit. Open the electrical service panel and unscrew the terminals holding the wires for the disposal. Pull the wires out.

    • 3

Disconnect the washer drain line. Unscrew the hose clamp with a screwdriver and slide it down the hose and off the disposal nipple. Pull the hose off the disposal.

    • 4

Loosen the locking ring located at the top of the disposal with a wrench.

    • 5

Rotate the disposal until it can be pulled down and away from the mounting bracket.
