How to Unhook a Garbage Disposal

Unhooking a garbage disposal is a job that can be done in just a few minutes. Occasionally, the garbage disposal will wear out from usage or faulty parts, requiring that it be replaced. Unhooking the disposal is fairly easy to do and includes removing just a couple parts in order to loosen the device. You can unhook the garbage disposal yourself, saving you the time and money of having a repairman come out to remove the disposal for you.

      Flip the breaker switch for the garbage disposal at the breaker box before attempting to unhook the disposal.

      Unfasten the screws on the garbage disposal base plate with a screwdriver, taking the plate off the bottom of the disposal.

      Remove the ground screw on the inside of the garbage disposal base with a screwdriver. Unfasten the electrical wire connectors at the base of the disposal, pulling the connectors off and separating the electrical wires.

      Loosen the screw clamp on the discharge hose attached to the garbage disposal with a screwdriver. Pull the discharge hose off the disposal by hand.

      Undo the bolts on the drain flange holding the garbage disposal in place with a nut driver. Turn the retaining ring at the top of the disposal by hand counterclockwise until the disposal comes loose.

      Remove the garbage disposal from underneath the sink.
