Troubleshooting Kitchen Aid Garbage Disposals

Turn off the cold water and the garbage disposal.

Use a long handled spoon or tongs to remove any lodged waste. If you cannot locate the stuck item, go to the next step.

Insert one end of the wrenchette into the small hole in the center of the bottom of your disposal. Work the wrenchette in a circular motion until it has completed a full rotation.

Use a long handled tool to again look for stuck objects. Carefully clear any foreign objects from the disposal using your tool.

Allow the motor to cool and then reset the unit. Let the motor cool for 3-5 minutes. Under the sink, locate the red button on the bottom of the disposal housing. Depress the button to reset it. Restart the cold water and the disposal unit.

Check the fuses and breaker. If the unit still does not operate properly, then you should check that the fuse to the power supply is not blown and that the breaker has not been tripped. You can usually find your breaker box in a closet or the garage.

Contact a service provider if the disposal does not operate after completing the six steps above.
