How to Install a Kitchen Garbage Disposal

Installing a garbage disposal is a job that can be done in about an hour. Not only can garbage disposals help you to clean up leftover food, but it also reduces the amount of waste that goes into landfills. The garbage disposal is conveniently mounted underneath the sink, keeping it out of sight, but accessible for easy use. You can install a garbage disposal yourself, saving you the time and money of calling a professional to do the work for you.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the breaker switch to verify that the switch for the garbage disposal is in the "off" position before installing a new garbage disposal.

    • 2

Disconnect the waste pipes underneath the sink with a pipe wrench, setting the pipes out of the way. Lift the mounting flange on the top of the drain out of the drain hole with a putty knife, working your way around until the flange comes loose.

    • 3

Place a bead of plumber's putty around the lip of the drain hole, approximately 1/2 inch in diameter. Set the new mounting flange into the drain hole, pressing down to secure the flange tightly to the drain hole with the putty.

    • 4

Place the mounting assembly under the sink, connecting it to the mounting flange with the mounting snap ring over the assembly. Tighten the mounting assembly screws with a screwdriver until the mounting flange is set firmly on top of the drain hole.

    • 5

Clean the mounting flange on top of the drain hole with a clean damp cloth, removing any excess plumber's putty. Place the top of the new garbage disposal into the mounting assembly, turning the ring clockwise to lock the disposal in position.

    • 6

Attach the drain pipes to the side of the new garbage disposal with a pipe wrench, running the pipes to the existing drain pipe. Plug the electrical cord attached to the new garbage disposal into a nearby electrical outlet.

    • 7

Flip the breaker switch for the garbage disposal to the "on" position at the breaker box.
