How to Choose a Home Garbage Disposal

Decide which type of garbage disposal is best for your home. Continuous-feed disposals are activated by a switch and cost between $60 and $350. Bath-feed disposals are activated by a special drain plug. This type has more power than the continuous-feed units. They have added safety measures, such as not allowing hands or objects into them while running, but they can be more expensive, usually $160 to $500.

Choose a power level. Garbage disposal power is measured in horsepower. Most household models provide 1/3 to 1/2 horsepower; this is plenty for general use. If you plan to use the disposal a lot, for example, if you entertain actively or run a catering business from your home, you should opt for more power, such as a 3/4- to 1-horsepower unit.

Look for a garbage disposal that has an additional cutting blade below the turntable if you plan to use it for difficult material, such as peels. This extra blade will add more cutting power.

Pick a disposal that's primarily made of stainless steel. This is the most durable and reliable material, and it won't rust or corrode.

Review additional features carefully. Some disposals come with a feature that automatically turns off the engine if it overheats. You can also find disposals with an automatic reverse mechanism to prevent clogs. Additional features could add to the price but will usually extend the life of your garbage disposal.
