Run cold water into the disposal during use and for a few seconds after grinding is finished if the drain becomes clogged with food or the disposal takes a long time to grind. Insufficient water during use may also cause the disposal to smell.
Place citrus fruit peels into the disposal and grind if the disposal begins to smell. If the smell continues, use a disposer cleaner, which can be purchased at most grocery stores or drugstores.
Avoid placing grease, egg shells or excessively large amounts of food into the disposal if the pipes begin to clog.
Clear a blocked disposal by stopping the sink opening and filling the sink halfway with warm water. Add 1/4 cup baking soda mixed with 1 tbsp. water and pour into the sink. Turn on the disposal, remove the sink stopper, and allow the disposal to run for a few minutes.
Contact an authorized service technician to clear pipe blockages if the above steps do not resolve the problems.
