How to Install Kitchen Sink Drains With a Garbage Disposal

A garbage disposal lets you put food scraps into your sink; the food waste is shredded into smaller bits and flushed down the drainpipe. Garbage disposals are a convenience but some things must never be put into your disposal to keep it running properly. A general rule is never put anything into the garbage disposal that could congeal or turn into a sludge that could clog your drain. For example, it is not recommended to put coffee grounds, potato peels or grease into a garbage disposal. Garbage disposals interfere with septic waste decomposition so some areas do not allow homes to have them, check your area's local codes before starting this project.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the cover plate to wire the disposal if the appliance cord is not pre-attached. Connect like-colored cords together, black wire to black wire and white wire to white wire. Connect the green cord (the ground) to the garbage disposal's grounding screw. Enlist the help of the disposal's manual if the wire colors are different.

    • 2

Roll a rope of plumber's putty and place it to the underside of the drain flange if you have a porcelain or stainless sink. Apply silicone caulk to the underside of the drain flange if you have a composite or marble sink. Press the drain flange with the putty/caulk side down into the drain hole. Fit the backup ring, fiber gasket and mounting ring onto the bottom of the drain flange from underneath the sink.

    • 3

Mount the mounting ring by tightening the screws for the upper mounting ring with a screwdriver. Pull the ring up so that it is even with the sink by alternating the tightening of the mounting screws.

    • 4

Put the disposal into place by pushing it up into the mounting ring. Check the disposal to make sure that its outlet is facing the discharge pipe. Turn the lower mounting ring clockwise by hand until the garbage disposal is fully supported.

    • 5

Measure the discharge pipe and cut it with a hacksaw to the appropriate length to be to be able to connect to the disposal outlet. Connect the disposal's outlet to the discharge pipe and connect the drain line with slip nuts.

    • 6

Turn a screwdriver or disposal wrench clockwise in the mounting lug on the lower mounting ring to lock the disposal in place. Tighten the slip nuts with water-pump pliers. Run water down the garbage disposal and turn the garbage disposal on to check for leaks. Adjust fittings as needed.
