Garbage Disposal Repair Instructions

If your garbage disposal is clogged or does not run when you turn on the wall switch, save money by troubleshooting and repairing the problem yourself instead of calling a plumber. Waiting to fix the disposal could lead to even bigger problems, such as chunks food blocking your sink's drain pipe. If you are still unable to find the problem, you may have to remove the garbage disposal to thoroughly clean it out or even replace the entire unit.

Things You'll Need

  • Replacement gasket (if needed)

Instructions

    • 1

Tighten the connection between the drain pipe and the garbage disposal unit if you notice water leaking from the bottom. If this does not stop the leak, disconnect the pipe and replace the rubber gasket inside. Water leaking from the top of the disposal unit is a sign that the top seal has failed. The top seal cannot be replaced, so you must install a new garbage disposal.

    • 2

Look under the sink to see if the power cord is plugged into an electrical outlet if your garbage disposal does not make any noise when the switch is turned on. Check the home's circuit breaker switch and reset it if it has been tripped.

    • 3

Find the red reset button on the underside of the garbage disposal. Push it back down if it is in the upright position.

    • 4

Unplug the garbage disposal or turn off the circuit breaker. Reach down the sink drain and clear out any food, utensils or other debris that may be clogging the disposal. Move under the sink and insert a hex wrench into the hole on the bottom of the garbage disposal unit. Rotate the wrench clockwise to turn the flywheel and dislodge any obstructions.
